Shadyside · Pittsburgh

A new and unique lodging concept in Pittsburgh

Once a pre-Civil War mansion, the Gatehouse sits at the entrance to leafy and serene Chatham University, in the heart of Pittsburgh’s Shadyside neighborhood — minutes from many of the city’s major attractions, including Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Pittsburgh, the Carnegie Institute, the Frick and Phipps Conservatory.

What sets the Gatehouse apart is not only its early Victorian architecture and historic interior design, but its flexibility as a place to stay.

Staying Here

All guest rooms are self-contained, with their own bathrooms and amenities including refrigerators and microwave ovens, and each has a separately locking door. Of the five recently renovated guest quarters at the Gatehouse, four are suites with separate living areas and bedrooms.

The common areas draw their own reaction — a spectacular great room for socializing and game playing, and a light, airy dining area for guests to gather. There is also a fully stocked kitchen, with more dining seating still.

Ample complimentary off-street parking is right on the premises, while the PRTX rapid transit bus line is just outside the door, offering easy public transportation to downtown and Oakland.

The Gatehouse is a fabulous alternative to cookie-cutter chain hotels, and what makes it especially enticing is that flexibility: book a single room Sunday through Thursday, or take the entire property Airbnb-style — exclusively so on Fridays and Saturdays, and at the guest’s option on weekdays.

The Gatehouse is managed by the Priory Hospitality Group, the premier owner and operator of boutique hotels in Western Pennsylvania. Its sister property, the spectacular Mansions on Fifth Hotel, is a half mile to the west, and Gatehouse guests are invited to enjoy everything the Mansions has to offer — including its cozy Oak Room pub and its well-appointed fitness center.
